Platelet Size in Throinbocytopenias and Thrombocytosis

چکیده

Planimetric studies were carried out on canine blood platelets fixed with formaldehyde. In the normal dog, the mean platelet area was 5.25 sq/i (SEM ± 0.34 sq/i). During the first 3 days following acute experimental thrombocytopenia, platelet area increased, averaging 9.5 sq/i (p < 0.01). The reactive thrombocytosis following splenectomy or nephrectomy was not accompanied by a rise in large platelets. Platelet size decreased to 3.9 sq/i in dogs made thrombocytopenic by intravenous injections of mitomycin C. The morphologic changes induced by the various experimental procedures suggest that: (1) newly formed platelets are larger than platelets of a normal population; (2) some large platelets are possibly released by macromegakaryocytes; (3) other large thrombocytes probably represent fragments of granular megakaryocytes; (4) senescence of platelets in the circulation is associated with decreasing size; and (5) large young platelets are preferentially retained in vivo on glass beads.

Jak-2 mutation frequency in patients with thrombocytosis

Background: We aimed to investigate the etiologic causes and the existence of Janus kinase 2  mutation (JAK2) in cases with thrombocytosis. Methods: In this retrospective study, patients, who were admitted to hematology clinic with thrombocytosis between 2013 and 2015, were investigated in terms of the etiological causes of thrombocytosis and the existence of JAK2 mutation. Results: We retrospe...

A Case Report of Newborn with Thrombocytosis Born to an Opioid-addict Mother

Neonatal thrombocytosis is a very rare phenomenon in infants born to addict mothers. It can be due to opioids withdrawal and occurs a few days after delivery. The etiology is unknown and it is eradicated gradually without any complication. The reported neonate was born to a heroin addict mother who has used methadone during pregnancy. The neonate was admitted in 14th day of life in neonatal int...

Prolonged thrombocytosis in mice after 5-fluorouracil results from failure to down-regulate megakaryocyte concentration. An experimental model that dissociates regulation of megakaryocyte size and DNA content from megakaryocyte concentration.

Rodents treated with 150 mg/kg of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) exhibit a marked and prolonged rebound thrombocytosis, suggesting that feedback control of one or more megakaryocyte characteristics (size, polyploidy, or concentration) is altered. To determine the changes in megakaryocytes that lead to such a profound thrombocytosis, C3H mice were injected with 150 mg/kg 5-FU, and platelet and megakaryoc...

Platelet volume analysis for differential diagnosis of thrombocytosis.

The results of the Coulter counter S plus II platelet volume analysis were studied in 100 patients with reactive thrombocytosis (platelet count greater than 500 X 10(9)/l), in 30 patients with myeloproliferative thrombocytosis, and in 32 patients with chronic myeloproliferative disease and a platelet count less than 500 X 10(9)/l. Patients with reactive thrombocytosis had considerably lower mea...
